In summer 2026 will starts the 12th edition of our stop motion animation course. The enrolment process is open now! The teachers will be Iván Sarrión and David Caballer. The course is mainly based on practical and individual exercises using ball&sockets puppets, digital reflex cameras, and Dragonframe animation software.
MAIN OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE
To train animation students to work in professional stop motion shootings. The students will learn about storyboard interpretation and animating characters using Dragonframe animation software.

You’ll animate with Dragonframe, work with ball-and-socket puppets, and shoot your own scenes using DSLR cameras and motion control rigs.

Learning Goals and Curriculum

The course starts with the basics and gradually moves to advanced stop motion techniques, ensuring everyone can follow at their own pace.

The program
The program is structured around progressive learning modules that guide you from concept to final production. The main learning goals include:
- Understanding animation principles: timing, spacing, anticipation, arcs, and squash & stretch.
- Developing storytelling and visual composition for stop motion shorts.
- Operating Dragonframe software for shooting and controlling camera movements.
- Learn about lighting and ambiance
- Editing and sound integration with Adobe Premiere and After Effects.
Each student produces a short film as a final project, forming part of their professional portfolio.
Hands-on practice with Dragonframe and real puppets.
You’ll learn to use Dragonframe — the industry-standard software for stop motion animation used by professional studios. Through guided exercises, students explore exposure control, onion-skinning, frame capture, and camera calibration. You’ll also work with real armatured puppets, learning how to pose them for fluid, expressive movement.
Working with real materials helps you understand the physicality of stop motion: gravity, weight, and texture. You’ll design small sets, handle lighting setups, and explore motion control for dynamic camera transitions — essential for professional animation production.
Common beginner mistakes and how to avoid them.
Every animator starts somewhere — and beginners often face similar challenges. Our instructors help you recognize and correct the most frequent mistakes in stop motion animation:
- Inconsistent lighting or camera movement between frames.
- Forgetting to check focus or depth of field.
- Over-animating without planning timing properly.
- Ignoring the importance of secondary actions and subtle gestures.
Through detailed feedback sessions, you’ll learn to analyze your shots, plan transitions, and refine your characters’ movement until they feel alive
